Does anyone know how to read and write to PC formatted syquest
cartridges using CrossDOS on the Amiga. I can read/write to Amiga and
MAC format syquests (using MaxDOS). I use CrossDOS for floppies all the
time but now have a need to use PC syquests on Amiga.
Thanks in advance for any info.

Why are people so quick to assume that someone is a priate if something
does not install correctly?  I tried in installing Photoshop 3.0 on My
ALPHA and it does not work, it worked fine on my old intel machine.


We all know that there are pirates out there and basically we can't
stop them, I least I think so.

No I think a vague reference to male genitalia would be better! ;)  Actually
that is a great idea.  Everyone I talk to that doesn't know lightwave always
comments on the quality of the rendering, and finding donations would be
easy.  Gee it seems so clear to the people on the NG, why don't the powers that
be understand it also?  Anyone read "Atlas Shrugged"?

Hello all!

I'm aware that there is a limit in the number of vertices and polygons
in a LightWave object, but is there a similar limit in the number of
images that are used?

It seems that the limit is around 220 images in one object file.
When layout tries to load this object, it loads and loads, then
crashes.

Actually installing Photoshop on more than one computer you own is a violation of
your license agreement (the envelope you tore open that contained the software).  So
technically you are also guilty of pirating, of the non-malicious sort. ;)

Wouldn't you need the Alpha version of Photoshop for the DEC Alpha
rather than trying to install the INTEL Version on a DEC Alpha?
You wouldn't try to install the Alpha version of lightwave on a
Pentium would you?

It's probably the look-ahead frames setting in the motion requestor.
This number is how many frames LW "looks ahead" to determine the
object's orientation.  Try increasing and decreasing it, see if that
improves things.

It always messes up at the end, 'cause on the last frame there's
nothing to look ahead to.  If your look-ahead number is greater than
1, say 5, the last 5 frames will have the problem.

To beat this, make your motion path longer than your scene.  This
ensures that there's always something to look forward to.  Kind of
like your reach exceeding your grasp. <g>

Wavefront was used for the backgrounds/space cloud/solar flares and
volumetrics for the opening sequence and then the LightWave generated
ship (for three shots) or the real model (for the other three) was
composited in. A stand-in Voyager was used for the volumetric effect and
then ours comped on top.

Absolutely correct. But first, they need to identify the qualities that
make a person an  expert in that field, separate the wheat from the chaff,
and hire the best qualified candidate for the respective position (as it
applies to NewTek--marketing, engineering, R & D, etc.). That only comes
from some having some semblance of understanding of the business you're
in, whether it's Boeing (Frank Scrontz), Microsoft (Bill Gates),  or
french fries (J.R. Simplot). Could these men swap companies and run them
as successfully as their predecessor? Probably not. Granted, they'd have
troops of MBA's offering sound  business advice and guidance along the
way. But a CEO needs vision, a master plan, or at least be able to think
on his feet fast enough to stay one step ahead of his competitors.

All of the interviews with Tim and Paul in VTU (pre-divorce) seemed to
indicate they were in denial with respect to the Amiga's dire straits.
Perhaps they were just putting on a happy face for the rest of the world.
I would like to think that both of them knew better and that privately,
they were looking ahead, planning for a worst-case scenario and laying the
groundwork for a PC Toaster/Flyer. Now, from what can be gathered here,
they in fact weren't. It would appear that Paul was the first to share
these concerns with Tim, which in turn led to the turmoil.

I'm still not clear however on why, if Tim was so adamantly opposed to
developing products for other platforms as Paul suggested (a heresy for
which Paul & the others were either later dismissed or left on their own,
depending on which story you buy), why the sudden about-face a few weeks
before NAB last year (assuming that Lee's version of events is correct)
and the mad dash to pull the Flyer for Windows out of their hat? Something
is still missing from this story.

Fine. But use, understand, and show enthusiasm for the product you're
selling and the people you're selling it to. Bill Gates has probably never
planted a potato. J.R. Simplot has. Simplot has never written code (that

I agree. Though I suspect the best we can hope for is a Pat & Vanna-type

No. It's not weird. If one is excited about something, they'll want to
share the good news with others. Lee was (correction, still IS) excited
about Lightwave and that came across on the tapes. That kind of enthusiasm
is contagious and entices the viewer to pay attention to what is being
said which, in turn, leads to a greater likelihood the information will be
remembered and easily retrieved when needed.

      I'm confused on how you people know exactly what my father can and
cannot do!  Not one of you knows how much he really knows about any Newtek
product.
       I was trying to say that no CEO needs to be an expert at their
product. That is why companies hire experts.  How about you call my father

The win32s versions from LightWave and ER conflicted on my machine.  I found
that using the latest win32s from Microsoft allowed each to work OK.  I am
running Win95 now and ER says that one of the DLLs (I think it is the 3D
control DLL) won't work except with NT (or something like that).  However,
except for the error message on starting ER, everything works fine.  Maybe I
should call ER to see if they have a patch/fix or update.

Actually, what is probably easier is to make the ball into a box.  Creative
use of Set Value in one dimension should make this fairly easy.

Don, were you at the same Commodore Dealers Meeting that I was, when they
introduced their newest President, an "acquisition" from PepsiCo? His
opening remarks to us dealers were "Don't worry because I don't know
anything about computers, if I could make a living selling colored water, I
can sell anything."

Commodore is the absolute PERFECT model to use when discussing the adage
"Technology will sell itself", don't you think?

Sure - with PVR 2.51. In the "VR Player" program, Under the Edit menu,
you'll find Join and Duplicate. Join will take all the PVD files in the
PlayList and pack them all into a single PVD file. You have the option of
deleting the original files or leaving them intact. Duplicate will let you
make duplicates, ping-pong, or reverse copies. The reverse option will even
reverse the field order if you tell it to, great for field-rendered anims.

I think the Photoshop license, like most software licenses, allows you
to install it on more than one machine as long as you only use it on
machine at a time. This allows you to use the program at work and at
home.

Pirating issues aside, the Intel version of Photoshop will not work on
an alpha machine. Alpha's currently can only emulate 16 bit Intel
operations, since much of Photoshop is 32 bit it must be recompiled
for the Alpha processor to work. Look for an upcoming program called
FX32 from DEC, which will allow the Alpha to emulate a 486 in 32bit
mode.

if you want to send you image sequences, I'll record them to BetacamSP for 50 cents /frame - but
you don't render 1280x1024, it's still NTSC. our frame player is 720x486.
film is a whole other ball game. there are only a few companies with the equipment to record
digital and it is extremely expensive.

Yes, indeed. A lot of people read Atlas...let me explain a bit of NewTek
history not generally discussed...

I've been an Ayn Rand fan since I was 15. I went to Ayn Rand's funeral -
plus I did audiotaping on a lecture course done by her heir, and went to
an Objectivist private high school...

When i first went to NewTek, Tim Jenison had a picture of AR on the wall
of his office...a BUNCH of NewTekkers were O'ists, too....(ever notice the
VTU cover with Atlas? Coincidence...no) There are other clues, like my
reference to creating a 'Rearden Metal' surface in the 2.0 manual...

So - to things in Atlas terms....I'm trying to save the railroad...

Assuming you're getting say, 64MB of RAM, a two gig drive, and the
Perception with drive, and lets throw in a 21" monitor, I'd say about
$12k.

I was reading directly from the Photoshop license agreement when I wrote this,
buit I forgot to read the little fine print under the first statement.  You are
right you may install it on one other computer providing that you are the only
user of both computers.  Actually none of this is true pirating, I was just
joking. :)

    Greg, I know a buncha youguys went out and bought 21" monitors:  tell
me, how does that affect your productivity?  They look really sweet, but the

Yeah Richard I went over there too and messers Gould and Bishop (the guys @ Premier
Vision) are indeed very helpful and knowledgeable. Unfortunately, and they might well
agree with me here, they are enthusiasts and gfx/video experts rather than hard-sell
businessmen, as Ive only seen fleeting adverts for LW in computer based mags such
as Amiga Computing. LW NEEDS much more of a marketing push, be it from Premier
Vision or from Newtek themselves in order to cut a hole in Autodesks sales figures!
It needs to be advertised in computer related magazines more, and indeed in Video
magazines too!

I dont suppose you would be so kind as to relay some of the information from

Does this mean that if you lose your dongle Newtek revokes your licence to use
Lightwave? I didn't see that in the licencing statement as a condition of revokation.
Or do you really own the program as this might suggest? How many ways does Newtek want
to eat their cake?

If there was an Alpha version of Photoshop one would probably install it, But there isn't one...
FX!32 seems to be our only hope for the near future. Keep an eye on it.

I have been researching Pentium Pro vs. Pentium, there is a good article
in the computer shopper for March (yes I do read the articles :) ) and
theit had some CPU ratings.
The ratings are something like the following.
PPro 200 = Pentium@300mhz in 32bit app.
PPro 200 = Pentium@180mhz in 16bit app.
PPro 150 = Pentium@230mhz in 32bit app
PPro 150 = Pentium@133mhz in 16bit app
The price for a Pentium 166 chip is about $650
The price for a PPro 200 chip is about $1500
So price performance is about the same for both a Pentium 166 and Pro 200.
The part that throws off the price performance is the motherboard costs.
Mother boards are about 2.5 times more for Pro.
In my oppinion always buy the fastest CPU you can because it is the RAM
that will really set you back.

   There is an Alpha version of Micrografx Picture Publisher for
NT though I don't think they ever released it. If you try hard

Hazen,

Parity or non-parity has nothing to do program performance but
it sure has alot to do with your computer. Check your computer
manual to see what kind of memory it specifies and use only that
or your asking for trouble.
As always the more memory the better. Depending on the OS win,
95 or NT.

ImageFX 2.1a will save PICT files so the Mac can read them.  If you're
using photoshop on the MAC run photoshop then open the PICT file like
you would any other PICT file.  Do not drag and drop the file onto the
application icon.  Photoshop will look at the typeID and unless you've
set it to PICT using resedit (some other MAC program) the program will
just assume it's not a pict file without even checking the data.

Ps.  I know the PICT format does work I use it all the time when going
to Media Composer, or Photoshop at work.

  There's a shareware/PublicDomain program called Sound Machine for the
Amiga, written by Syd L. Bolton of Legendary Design Technologies Inc.

It can take IFF sound samples and convert them to WAVE format and vise
versa.

Hi. Could some kind developer post some kind of tutorial on how to create
plugins for LW/Intel, once we don't have AREXX there?
To be exact, which C compiler do you need? Any specific library? Is there
a specific sequence of linkings or something like this? Of course I'm not
advanced C or C++ programmer so some patient and detailed information
would be very appreciated not only for me, but for everyone that miss
AREXX (<:( R.I.P.).

Well, I don't know about a pc app. But "SoundBox" for the Amiga will do the
job. It's on Aminet.

Win NT has never delivered twice the performance of Win95 for rendering.
Win95 with SNII has always been nearly as fast as WinNT.  Since Rev C has been
released (and is available from ftp.newtek.com as a patch), you don't even
need to use SNII to be nearly as fast - or possibly even faster.

There ARE good reasons for using WinNT, but speed of rendering isn't one of
them.

I know that many of you have seen these benchmarks before, but Erik is very
proud of his 133Mhz Pentium.  This is for his benefit as well.  :^)

No.  I can backup the software and put the CD-ROMs in a safe place.  Since I
have multiple licences (OK - the studio has) I can actually have nine legal
copies (3 backups, 3 installs and 3 CD-ROMS).  So, I can pretty well guarantee
that I won't lose the software if it is stolen (yes - I keep a copy off-site).
I cannot do the same with the dongles.

The insurance is for the dongles since I can virtually eliminate the risk
associated with the software itself and since it is impossible to steal an
agreement (which is what the purchase really is).  I will only have a problem
if the dongle is lost or stolen.  So it IS dongle insurance.

   obviously you have never watched the tapes Lee made, or you would have
caught the wierd reference.. W is the shortcut for the stats menu, and
Lee's way of making people remember is was saying that it was a 'wierd'
shortcut - worked for me.

I've just come over from the 3DS world and I love LW4.0. My problem is
that I use Dave's TGA animator to create 16bit FLH animations. Light
Wave saves The Images I this Format( Name.TGA#.TGA). DTA can't
read those long names. is there a way to make LW save The files in the
regular dos format?

How can one tell what revision of Lightwave one has?  (Geez...I sound

I sent these questions to NewTek a few times and no one seems to
answer there email there. Since they do no seem to put much interest
in answering potential customers I am having second thoughts about
NewTek as a serious company dedicated to ther customers. I know
the're many other 3d programs with great features for under $1000
like (Real3d,HASH,etc.). I sent similar question to other these other
companies and there responce was quick and informative. But I just
keep coming back to how LW output "looks". That however can not be
the only criteria for choosing a 3d program.

How is NewTek Tech support like?

These where the questions I asked Newtek:

I am interested in purchasibg another 3-D program. I currnetly
use Truespace 2 and Ray Dream Designer. Does NewTek (Lightwave v4.0)
have a competitive upgrade policy for TS users?

On the Lightwave Newsgroup it is said that NewTek does not
replace lost or stolen dongle. If you do replace stolen or lost
dongle what is your price policy?

Are they coming out with a new version of Lightwave which will
integrate the modeler-layout modules, and are there any plans for 3d
real-time API like OpenGL or 3DR, and when is it due?

I think a crippled but self running demo of layout/modeler playing
tutorials would convince most people of what LW can do. They'll see how
"easy" it is to use by example.

Just to clarify the above, I will give you my copy of LightWave,
in the box, free of charge.  In fact, the registration card is
still in the box, so you can register it to yourself.

Also, in case you are not familiar with the Perception Video
Recorder, it is a top-of-the-line digital video board that allows
you to record video to a dedicated hard drive, as well as output
to videotape.  This is especially useful for putting your LightWave
animations on tape so you can show people the work that you do.
You can also do all kinds of video editing with professional
results.
It supports S-Video, Composite, and Component Video for both input
and output.
However, my board (PVR 2500) only allows for video output.
But if you want to, you can purchase the daughterboard, which will
allow you to capture video.

This is an outstanding graphics workstation, and I really hate to
see it go.

Competitive upgrade for TS - No, I don't think so

Dongle - not sure, and not really sure if they are sure

Integrated modeler/render - I hope not. I don't know any LW users who want
that - modeling is one job, and animation is another - I would like an
easier 'pipeline' between the two.....

OpenGL - there are plug-ins already

I have 2 computers networked for the sole purpose of rendering via
ScreamerNet.  The problem is; I can't get windows (3.11 OR win95 for that
matter) to recognize my PAR as a legitimate hard drive.  Under win3.11 I
can share the PAR drive, the other node (windows95) says that the drive is
not accessable.

Is anybody out there using SN to render directly to their PAR drive?!
Please help.

No but we are looking into the dc20 seriously for off-line editing
with premiere.As long as the avi`s are called the same we should then
be able to
move the project onto the pvr machine ,load it and on line automatically.

Yes it most certainly is ,it`s the same as what we use although 64
meg would help to stop usage of vrtual mem in big renders.exellant
starting position.
